Biografía
En agosto de 1988, Rubén A. Hidalgo inició su doctorado en la Universidad de Stony Brook, Nueva York, bajo la supervisión de Bernie Maskit —siendo así miembro oficial de los «Maskitiers»—. En abril de 1991 defendió su tesis, centrada en las uniformizaciones de Schottky de superficies de Riemann que reflejan un grupo dado de automorfismos. A partir de 1991 se trasladó a Alemania, precisamente a Bielefeld, donde se integró al SFB-343: Estructuras Discretas en Matemáticas (1991–1993) como Colaborador Científico bajo la supervisión de los profesores H. Helling y J. Mennicke. En 1992 inició el proceso de Habilitación en Bielefeld, completando su defensa a comienzos de 1994. En agosto de 1993 obtuvo un cargo en la Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, en Valparaíso, Chile, ciudad desde cuya oficina disfrutaba de una privilegiada vista al océano Pacífico. En 2015, siguiendo a otros miembros del grupo de geometría, se incorporó a la Universidad de La Frontera, 640 kilómetros al sur de Valparaíso —cambiando, como él mismo narra, el azul del océano por el verde oscuro de las araucarias.
